The classic, the touching and the weird

Article
page 2/2

When everybody thought it's impossible to make worse shark movies, the new age of filmmakers started to modify old ideas. So they made a new movie about the hybrid shark (Sharktopus) and the megalodon (Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus). Later the 2-Headed Shark Attack and the Sand Sharks became the new favorites of the B-movie fans who adored the frenzy of these fantasy monsters. There's a big difference between Jaws and these movies: the background is even more fictional. Hopefully nobody believes the story of two headed predators who happily chase bikini clad girls in the sea and the only one who can kill them is Brooke Hogan...

To be honest, the weirdest shark scene is much older than the movie about sharks who easily swim in the sand. The Zombi 2 from 1979 is a tradtitional bloody Italian horror but the scene when a nude scuba diver was attacked by a zombi who later fought with a shark is one of the most memorable underwater shots.

Sometimes it seems a shark can't be good or simply impassive. But there is an exception: in 1964 the Italian Folco Quilici made a movie about a native boy and his best friend, a tiger shark. The Jaws launched the series of shark thrillers but in 1979 Frank C. Clarke shot a new version about this predator-man friendship. Sadly the Beyond the Reef (Sharkboy of Bora Bora) isn't a masterpiece. But it's an important movie because it's like the shark version of the Flipper: the shark is not an enemy but a friend.

In the last decade we saw a lot of documentaries about the sharks and many viewers realized they aren't cruel monsters. On the other hand the sharks still mean danger in the feature films and sadly these movies are aired regularly too. It isn't surprising that many people still think seashore holidays are possible shark bait experiences. The spirit of the Jaws is still upon us... But the truth is, If we don't protect them we will see these beautiful animals only in documentaries. The humans are much more dangerous than any mechanical or CGI monster sharks of the silly movies...
