The blue Adriatic

Article

It’s not only fun but useful. You need to prepare to find those lurking fellows on your own because the Croatian regulations says you have to go to the dive site with a licensed center but they needn’t to dive with you unless you request. It’s good for the experienced divers who don’t go under water as members of larger groups but in buddy teams. Anyway, I recommend to join the local professional guides in deep spots and especially during penetration to wrecks or caverns.

There are many caverns in the Croatian Adriatic and plenty of them easy to dive. You’ll be surprised how nice to swim into the larger ones which has wide entrances in the shallow, and as you look back from the inside the rays of light create a mystic curtain. There are other ones with holes in the top which let the sunshine into the cave- a wonderful and easy-going experience even for a recreational diver. So listen carefully to the briefing if you don’t want to miss the few highlights of the specific dive site. Don’t waste your time waiting in the blue to see some pelagic animals, your chances is rarely better than in a pool. But on the other hand at least it makes easy to decide which lens to choose: macro for walls, reefs and rocky-sandy bottoms, and wide angle for wrecks and caverns. The same rule apply for the dives: if you want to enjoy them, learn and know what to expect. Take your time, watch carefully and the Adriatic will uncover its hidden secrets.

If you head to the south from Krk, the next two islands are quite popular amongst divers: Rab and Pag. Both have similar dive spots but there are some differences between the islands. Pag has lively towns but the best dives are near a small village in the north, Stara Novalja. Half dozen dive centers work here, who visit different spots of the vertical wall and offer shore dives where every animal of the shallows occur from the octopus to the greater weever. Here all the accommodations are self catering apartments close to the sea, but you will find similar ones in the opposite of Pag island in the Karlobag area as well. Families prefer the small holiday villages with nearby dive centers, as the parents can do a dive in the morning and join the relatives and friends to have lunch. In Rab they offer dives for every taste, you can do both one tank trips or two tank daytrips and you will see lobsters, crabs, sponges, tube worms and plenty of smaller fish under water. Many divers come here to do technical courses or dives too while the children use to enjoy one of the few sandy beach of Croatia near Lopar.

The southern part of the Croatian Adriatic called Dalmatia where Mediterranean charm, historical towns and picturesque small villages attract the guests, depending on their diving and sightseeing plans. Cliffs, beaches, bright white houses, resorts all along the road down to Dubrovnik- it’s one of the most spectacular coasts of Europe. And don’t forget about the Dalmatian islands! The most beloved ones in the south are Brac, Hvar, Korcula and Vis. The more colorful underwater landscape and the exciting caverns make popular this region amongst divers. The wreck enthusiasts praise Vis island, especially those who do technical dives. B-17 and B-24 planes, the Teti, Vassilios T, Ursus and other boats lie on the bottom, but many of them between 50-70 meters (165-230 feet). Some dive centers offer high quality services for trimix divers, and those who don’t travel with twin sets will need their help. There are still plenty of unknown wrecks from different ages in the Adriatic- maybe you’ll be one of the lucky divers who find a historical site. Just to mention one of the recent finds: divers located the wreck of the famous B-24, the Tulsamerican near Vis. From the nice Murter island where you can go by bridge or from the town of Biograd it's easy to dive the famous Kornati national park's best dive sites. The location of Dugi Otok island is perfect too if you want to see what Kornati or Telascica parks offers under water.
